Psittacine beak and
feather disease (PBFD)
Psittacine Beak and
Feather Disease (PBFD) is a fatal viral disease, extremely
contagious, that affects the beak, feathers, and immune system of
birds
belonging to the Psittacidae family.
This disease is more commonly
seen in cockatoos, parrots, and lorikeets, but some doves and pigeons
could be affected as well. It is often seen in birds that are less than
two years of age.
Polyoma Virus
Polyoma virus
is a disease that causes bird’s feathers to develop improperly. This
disease is more often seen in young birds, between two weeks and five
months of age.
Polyoma virus was also known
as Budgerigar Fledgling disease since it was
first discovered in
budgies, although now most species of psittacine birds are predisposed
to the disease.
Psittacosis (Chlamydia Psittaci)
Psittacosis
is one of the most common bacterial infections in companion birds. This
disease is very contagious among parrot species, but it can infect
parakeets, canaries, and other avian species as well.
Psittacosis can also affect
people badly, causing flu and respiratory problems among other
symptoms.
